Breton Tunes
We’ll be learning dance tunes from Brittany (the “Celtic” part of France), along with chords, styling, harmonization, and melodic variations. The tunes tend to be modal with a primal feel, and are accessible on most instruments. Teaching will be through repetition, but written music will be handed out as a memory aid.
About Jim Oakden
Jim is a primarily a dance musician, performing on an absurd array of instruments in a wide range of traditional and ethnic styles. Jim has been a long-time staff musician at major trad dance camps, has toured and performed in Britain, Australia, Spain and throughout the US, and is a dance organizer. He joined his first Breton band in 1999, and started teaching Breton music at Lark mostly so he could create a shared repertoire of Breton tunes in California (and nationally) that folks can play when they get together.
