Colombian Cumbia & Vallenato Ensemble
Cumbia and Vallenato are genres of living folk music from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Both feature the diatonic accordion accompanied by vocals, hand percussion, bass, guitar and, in some cases, horns and woodwinds. The music represents a distinct synthesis of Indigenous, African and European musical traditions and instruments. In this workshop we will learn about the historic roots and contemporary role of cumbia and vallenato throughout Latin America while developing a repertoire of classic songs to perform for dancers. Lyrics with translations and chords provided.
