This workshop is designed for any guitar player who has not played in DADGAD before, and would like an introduction to accompanying traditional Irish tunes in DADGAD, or just wants to get a feel for what DADGAD has to offer and how it might be applied to song accompaniment, or other genres. We’ll cover the basics, including I-IV-V chord progressions and shapes, minor keys and chords, chordal bass runs, right-hand strumming patterns for reels, jigs and other tune types, and playing in different keys with and without a capo. Most importantly, we’ll make sure you learn how to listen carefully to traditional Irish tunes, truly hearing the melody and groove, recognizing patterns, and developing a basic toolkit for accompanying, by ear, any of the thousands of Irish tunes that may cross your path. (We’ll supply a melody player, but do bring a capo and flatpick.)
