Join me for an overview of many rhythms played throughout the Balkans and basic tupan techniques. The Balkans encompasses many countries within Eastern Europe including, but not limited to, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Greece and Turkey. The tupan, called davul in Turkey and daouli in Greece, is a shoulder slung drum that all of these countries share.  We will explore the tupan, its rhythms and its relationship to music and dance. Reference recordings will give the rhythms context and workshop attendees will be given a basic idea of what the dance looks like. We have a limited number of tupans available, so please bring yours, or you can use other drums (i.e. doumbek or frame drum). All skill levels are welcome!
