About Larry Israel
Larry Israel studied and performed with Dumisani "Dumi" Maraire from 1977 to 1982. Dumi was the talented musician who brought Zimbabwean marimba and mbira music to Seattle in 1968 and began its spread all over North America. After playing in Dumi's band, Larry performed in three other outstanding Seattle-based marimba ensembles, then moved to Santa Cruz in 1997 where he and his wife, assistant teacher Angela Marie, play in Kuzanga Marimba. He has been teaching marimba since 1986, primarily based on Dumi's teaching methods and repertoire. Larry co-founded and has taught at the Zimbabwean Music Festival (Zimfest, usually held in Washington or Oregon).
