Turkish Ensemble
The Turkish Ensemble workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of Turkish makam (modal system) and explores how to use these modes as a framework for improvisation. Students will learn songs from both the folk and classical traditions of Turkey, with a focus on melodic development and phrasing. All instruments and skill levels are welcome—however, we will also venture into the expressive world of microtones, offering a unique opportunity for musical expression.
About Larry Klein
Larry began playing guitar at the age of seven, later performing and recording rock music on several albums for both Voxx and Epitaph Records. He was introduced to the oud and makam at Lark Camp in 1997 through classes with David Brown and Ernie Fischbach, and soon expanded into studying North African Andaluse music with Maestro Omar Ait-Vimoun. Shortly after, he developed an interest in the intricacies of Turkish music and the makam system. He studied oud with Masters Necati Çelik and Sinan Erdemsel, and lived in Turkey for over fifteen years, gaining a deep understanding of the cultural and musical traditions of the region. Through his love of music, Larry also developed a strong interest in foreign languages - he speaks fluent Turkish and Farsi, and continues to study the Kurmanji dialect of Kurdish.
